Kenyasi No.1- October 12, 2015- A fourth year biomedical student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Gottifred Williams Opoku Kumi from Yamfo has received GHC 15,000.00 worth of Scholarship for winning the 2015/2016 NADeF/Liebherr Excellence Scholarship Award.
The scholarship which covers academic user fees, accommodation, stipend and allowance for books as well as a laptop computer was presented after a careful and rigorous review of all applications received from various brilliant students from the ten Newmont host communities attending various tertiary institutions in the country.
The scholarship is a partnership between Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF) and Liebherr Mining Limited to help highly motivated and brilliant science students, to overcome financial challenges which hinder undergraduate studies.
The Board Chairperson of NADeF, Monica Nkrumah, congratulated Mr. Kumi for emerging winner of the award competition and urged him to learn hard to justify the scholarship.
“We hope that when you become a medical doctor it will benefit the entire Ahafo community and Brong Ahafo region,”she added. She thanked Liebherr Mining Limited for its support for NADeF’s Human Resource Development component in awarding excellence in the sciences and called on other contracting companies of Newmont to emulate Liebherr in this regard.

The maiden award winner of the NADeF/Liebherr Excellence scholarship award, Elijah Boateng, a Mining Engineering student at University of Mines and Technology, UMaT, congratulated Gottifred Williams Opoku Kumi and cautioned him against complacency and mediocrity. According to him, Gottifred should strive towards excellence to enable him contribute his quota to his community’s development.
Gottifred who won the scholarship after applying for the third time thanked NADeF and Liebherr for the opportunity and promised to contribute his quota to his community and the entire region and Ghana as a whole.
